What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

A peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral neuropathy can cause pain and numbness in the arms, legs, hands, feet or other areas of your body. These symptoms are often described as “burning” or “tingling” because they may feel like there is an electric shock going through your body. In most cases, this condition causes mild to severe pain that can interfere with daily activities such as walking and working out at the gym.

Definition of peripheral neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nerves. Nerves are like wires that carry sensations and information to the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nerves are found in every part of your body, but peripheral neuropathy most often affects the arms, legs and hands.

Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness or tingling that spreads along a nerve, pain (usually burning), muscle weakness and loss of reflexes. It can also cause problems with sensations such as touch, temperature and vibration.
The most common symptom is pain (particularly at night) in one or more areas below the waist on both sides of your body. The pain usually starts slowly over time before progressing rapidly if left untreated."

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can be mild or severe, depending on the type of condition causing it.
The most common symptoms include:
  • numbness and tingling in your feet and hands
  • pain in your feet or legs when walking
  • burning pain that feels like pins and needles
  • tingling in the feet and hands

Diagnosis and treatment for people with peripheral neuropathy.
The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can often be treated with the help of a doctor or physical therapist. Many different medications are available to help ease the pain and discomfort, though some medications may have side effects. Physical therapy may also help ease your symptoms by helping you stay active and increase blood flow to your extremities.

Some treatments for peripheral neuropathy include:
  • Surgery: There are many noninvasive surgeries that can help treat peripheral neuropathy
There is a lot of research being done in the area of peripheral neuropathy. The goals of this research include understanding how nerves work, how they can be damaged and how they can heal.

This is a very common condition that can be caused by many different things. It is important for anyone who has symptoms of peripheral neuropathy to see their doctor so they can get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
