Muscle Spasm

What is a Muscle Spasm?

In the middle of the night, on the bike at the gym, when walking outside on a brisk evening—muscle spasms can interrupt at any moment. The striking pain or twitch from a muscle spasm can be a wake-up call that something in your life might be in excess, whether stress, exercise, or dehydration, and it's time for a simple change to daily habits and some rest.

What exactly is a muscle spasm?
A muscle spasm is exactly how it sounds, and it's likely that you've felt this highly common contraction. Muscle spasms can happen everywhere in the body, with sudden and involuntary moving, cramping, or twitching, that can feel anywhere between a harmless quiver and spasmodic, severe pain. Sometimes, the abrupt, uncontrollable force can feel torturous, like a charley horse that makes you shoot straight out of bed in the middle of a deep sleep. Muscle spasms can affect any body part, including:

  • hands
  • arms
  • thighs
  • calves
  • abdomen
  • back
  • feet

Common Causes of Muscle Spasms
Muscle spasms are seen as quite normal and very rarely are cause for alarm. They can affect everyone, young or old. The most common causes of muscle spasms include:

  • Dehydration: the depletion of electrolytes and blood volume when you don't drink enough fluids can cause an interruption of blow flow, resulting in twitching and cramps.

  • Stress: anxiety and psychological pain can lead to overstimulation of nerves or the brain sending stress-response signals to the muscles, causing them to throb, pulse, or contract.

  • Exercise: fatigue from overworked muscle fibers commonly presents itself as cramps or twitching of muscles; the loss of electrolytes and hydration after sweating, especially in hot weather, can also spur muscle spasms.

Other less common causes of muscles spasms include:
  • lack of sleep
  • medications
  • recreational drugs
  • nutritional deficiency
  • hormone changes
  • low blood sugar

Muscle Spasm Treatment
The good news is that when a muscle starts to have a mind of its own, you can take action. They can be treated quickly in the moment to lessen pain or disturbance and can even be prevented by:

  • stretching daily and before exercising
  • massaging the affected muscles
  • applying hot or cold packs to the area
  • drinking lots of water (especially when exercising or in hot weather)

Topical lotions and creams, like Arnica Infusion, can also offer fast relief for muscle spasms. For more pain relief guidance and remedies, make sure to check out the MendMeShop today.
